“Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself.”

one hundred book covers

summer 2022

Redesign a book cover every day for 100 consecutive days.

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator

I decided to challenge myself to create a design every day of the summer, and I wanted to put my own twist on the 100 or 365 day poster challenges that a lot of designers are doing on social media right now. So I chose book covers! The process for each one was different, but it was amazing to see how much my skill and speed improved over just these 100 days.
All 100 covers are visible on my Instagram @jesscarsonjones.

I definitely started to get burnt out by the end, but I learned a lot from this challenge. From Photoshop effects like gradient maps and layer styles to niche elements of illustration like how to draw blood and even to experimenting with AI, this challenge taught me a lot about specific techniques. I also learned about what makes a better book cover than others and a LOT about self-discipline. This was an excellent challenge, and I'm thinking about doing another type of 100 day challenge eventually. Maybe next summer...
